*9th grade students may register for either session based on availability and experience

Daily Schedule

The Seattle Sax Institute Summer Music Camp will meet from 9am-3pm each day.  Students are welcome to arrive by 8:30am to warm up and talk with our coaches before the day begins.  Our camp curriculum is collaboratively designed; and, some of the final curriculum decisions will be based on enrollment specifics. Here’s what you can expect from a typical day

An Example Day at the Camp:

  • 9:00 – Welcome/Warm-Ups/Chorales
  • 9:30 – Development of tone quality (analysis of tone production in differing styles: Ben Webster, Lucky Thompson,  John Coltrane)
  • 10:00 – Workshop
  1. Group A: Learning Jazz Standards (a guide to memorization by ear)
  2. Group B: Listening (Historical Saxophone to the Avant-Garde)
  3. Group C: Transcribing (a guide to choosing the right solo, including modern technology for faster work)
  • 11:00 – Private lesson with a Sax Institute coach
  • 11:30 – Ensembles (combos, quartets, or duos)
  • 12:00 – Lunch
  • 12:30 – Theory
  1. Group A: Music Theory (using dominant chords over the blues)
  2. Group B: Music Theory (application of the ii-V-I chord progression in standards)
  3. Group C: Music Theory (using chord substitutions over common chord progressions)
  • 1:00 – Special Event (creative improvisation and extended saxophone technique, led by Neil Welch) (all)
  • 1:30 – Learning standards
  • Group A: Jazz Standards (Straight, No Chaser, by Thelonious Monk)
  • Group B: Jazz Standards (Little Sunflower, by Freddie Hubbard)
  • Group C: Jazz Standards (All the Things You Are, by Jerome Kern)
  • 2:00 – Guest Performance
  • 2:30 – Jam Session with guest performer or student-led ensembles
  • 3:00 – Home/Pick-up
